What is a BTU?

BTU is a way to name different sizes of equipment, similar to a car being 100 horse power, and another being 600 horse power.

How to Find sqft?

To find sqft measure the length and width of your room and multiply the numbers, 10ft by 8ft room equals to 80sqft. Most of the time you will need a 12kBTU unit for a bedroom, and a 18kBTU unit for a garage, and a 24kBTU unit for a living+kitchen space.

BTU to Tons to sqft

12kBTU = 1 ton = 400sqft max

18kBTU = 1.5 ton = 600sqft max

24kBTU = 2 ton = 900sqft max

36kBTU = 3 ton = 1200sqft max

42kBTU = 3.5 ton = 1400sqft max

48kBTU = 4 ton = 1600sqft max

60kBTU = 5 ton = 2000sqft max

Simply search for the brand your unit is and the representative will assist you, they will usually require the serial number which is located on the side of the unit.

How to Know if an Installer is Qualified?

Ask them for their company name and look it up in “Check A License - CSLB - CA.gov” if their name pops up make sure their contractor license status is “Active”. Having a license is a good sign of a high quality contractor. Although sometimes people can take other companies names and pretend they are them, so be careful out there.

What is Zones?

Zones in Minisplit systems is a way to have 1 outdoor condenser unit, and multiple indoor air handler units, this is only good if you want less equipment visible on the outside, if space isn’t an issue I would recommend to install multiple single zoned units, since that way is much cheaper then any multizone system.
